The Vertical Bass Guitar (VBG)

This is second VBG that I've built. It is an upright bass and a regular electric bass all rolled into one... The best of both worlds.

The body is local Red Oak that has been "honeycombed" with a forstner bit to reduce the weight. Even though you don't "wear" it, it still has to be carted around, so weight is ultimately an issue. It has a 1/4" cap of Ancient Kauri that looks just beautiful. It also has a faux tailpiece of Rosewood.

The 24 fret, 34" scale neck is Maple with a Rosewood fretboard and an Ancient Kauri headstock veneer.

The body has several coats of shellac and 2 coats of MinWax Wipe-On semi-gloss poly. The shellac has really increased the beauty of the Kauri more so than with any other finish I have used on Kauri in the past. The neck is finished with a couple coats of shellac and then rattle can MinWax satin poly.

It has Grover Mini Bass Tuners, a Corian Nut, Wilkinson JB Pickups and a "big" fully adjustable bridge. It is wired like a Jazz Bass.

It has a Double Bass Endpin and uses a Heavy Duty Cymbal stand to keep it standing. The stand attaches to the bass using a Dunlop Strap Lock. It's all very sturdy.
