Ancient Kauri Tele-Coaster
A while back I got an email from a gentleman asking if I would build a guitar for his son from a piece of wood that he supplied. I had no problem with that and we worked out a deal.
The wood he supplied for the body is Ancient Kauri, which has been preserved underground in New Zealand since about the time of the last ice-age. The trees found underground have been carbon dated to be between 30,000 and 50,000 years old, making this the oldest known workable wood in existence.
So the body of this guitar has been cut from a beautiful quarter sawn slab of Ancient Kauri. It has been finished with several coats of oil. Initially I had applied a couple light coats of poly but the wood seemed to lose some of its character. So, I stripped it off and went strictly with the oil.
It has a 22 fret maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard. The maple has been finished with a couple light coats of poly. The tuners are Grover style sealed tuners. It has an unbleached bone nut.
The pickups are Seymour Duncan. There is a Vintage Stack Tele pickup in the bridge and an Alnico II Pro Humbucker in the neck position. At first I was a bit skeptical about the customers' choice of pickups, but he obviously did his homework because these pickups work great together. The guitar is wired like a standard Tele.
The bridge has 6 individual fully adjustable saddles. The strings mount through the body. All hardware is chrome.
